History about HoopsFest.
HoopsFest started during the summer of 2001 with 15 teams playing in a parking lot. Over the next couple of years, it grew modestly until the event found its niche on the 3rd Saturday in July. The community members and Borough of Tyrone have been extremely supportive as HoopsFest has grown into one of the largest 3-on-3 tournaments in the Northeast.
How did we get started? Jim and Jessica Kilmartin were sitting around their living room with a group of friends thinking about ideas to help impact the community of Tyrone and the idea of a 3-on-3 tournament arose. Annually, it brings in over 250 teams, 1000 players and approximately 5000 into downtown Tyrone. In 2016, players came from 9 different states to participate which was a record.
HoopsFest uses 150-200 volunteers to make it a success. Over 100 sponsors are key to fundraising for the expanding efforts of Joshua House. In 2016, Joshua House purchased and began renovations of the Tyrone National Guard Armory. The vision for the Joshua House Armory is that it will be a hub for the Tyrone community and a regional hub for youth all over central PA.
HoopsFest benefits the programs and services of Joshua House Inc. in Tyrone, PA. Joshua House is a 501(c)3 non-profit committed to helping youth find purpose. We are passionate about raising up young people that won’t merely be consumers but be contributors to making society and the world around them better.
